🎼 K’s COLUMN 051 : The Story Hidden Behind the Melody
Whenever summer arrives, there are certain songs that somehow begin playing in my mind.
One of them is “Club Tropicana” by Wham!
The music video adds so much to its cheerful atmosphere.
Even the sound of insects in the background evokes the feeling of summer.
Among the unforgettable moments is the bearded, half-naked man who appears here and there, wearing a straw hat, a bandana around his neck, and shaking a cocktail shaker. There is something delightfully over-the-top about him that always makes me smile.
Club Tropicana feels like a place where you could lose track of time, yet somehow reminds you not to forget it’s time to go home.
Its message seems to be, “Drop by, have a wonderful time, and come back again someday.”
That carefree spirit perfectly captures what I think of as the golden age of MTV in the early 1980s.
Then there is another summer song—“Copacabana” by Barry Manilow.
Released in 1978, it came before MTV changed the way people experienced music.
When Barry Manilow performed it live, he would occasionally dance a little, though he mostly stayed behind the microphone, saving his movements for the instrumental breaks.
The lively rhythm naturally makes your body want to move.
Back then, many of us even copied a popular dance move—stretching our arms forward, rolling them in circles, and bringing our fists up beside our ears.
But when you actually pay attention to the lyrics, you discover that beneath the upbeat melody lies the tragedy of a dancer.
Over the course of thirty years, the woman who once dreamed of becoming a star loses her youth, her lover, and even her heart.
Her entire life is condensed into a single song, making it a complete story in itself.
Yet somehow, the melody never lets you feel the full weight of that sadness.
As a young teenager, I had no idea.
I happily danced to the lively samba rhythm, spinning my arms around and laughing, never realizing what the song was truly about.
In Club Tropicana, people visit a tropical paradise for a brief vacation.
No one stays forever, and no one knows when they’ll return—but while they’re there, they enjoy every moment.
In contrast, Copacabana tells of one tragic night that changes the life of a young woman who dreamed of becoming a star.
Thirty years later, we even see her again—no longer young.
There is something quietly cruel about that.
Summer songs are not always just bright and cheerful melodies.
Even when they sound joyful, their lyrics can quietly hide someone’s life, sorrow, and lost dreams.
Perhaps that is why they continue to resonate in our hearts, even after so many years.
