🀗 K’s Wonder Poem 009 : 炬燵と麻雀
ポジちゃんは暑いのが苦手だが寒いのも苦手だ。
夏には冷却装置が必要だし、寒すぎるとそれはそれで動きが鈍るし固まることもある。
ポジちゃんは暖を求めて行き着いたところがあった。
そこには人間の足がたくさんあった。
ちょっと臭う気がしたが寒いよりはマシだと思った。
ポジちゃんは、自分がこたつの中にいることに気が付いた。
ジャラジャラと音がする。
ポジちゃんは炬燵から抜け出た。
どうせ人間には自分の姿が見えないのだから好都合である。
男性が４人いて、それぞれの辺に一人ずつ胡座をかいており、麻雀をしていた。
あぁ、まだこの遊びは廃れていなかった、とポジちゃんは思った。
ポジちゃんは卓上へ移動した。
牌がどんどん捨てられていく。
ポジちゃんは各人の牌を見て回った。
この人が早く上がりそうだな・・・、そんな感じで目星をつけていた。
そこへ1匹の猫が部屋へ入ってきた。
その家で飼われている猫のようだ。
人間は気付かなくても、猫はポジちゃんの気配に気づいたらしい。
「にゃ〜」
猫はポジちゃん目掛けて飛びかかった。
「あっ、コラ、何するんだ〜！！」
雀卓はグチャグチャになった。
もうすぐ上がりの男は嘆いた。
「なんだよ、折角いいところだったのに・・・」
「ちょっとママ、この子連れて行って〜！！」
家の主人は自分の妻に猫をどこかへ連れていくように言った。
ポジちゃんはそっと胸を撫で下ろした。
炬燵と麻雀の組み合わせ、なくなった文化かと思いきや密かに生きながらえていた。

🀗 K’s Wonder Poem 009 : Kotatsu and Mahjong
Posi-chan dislikes heat, but cold is no better.
He needs a cooling system in summer, and in winter she moves slowly and sometimes freezes up altogether.
Seeking warmth, Psji-chan wandered into a place filled with many human feet.
They smelled a little, but it was still better than the cold.
That’s when he realized he was inside a kotatsu — a heated table covered with a blanket.
A rattling sound echoed above.
Posi-chan slipped out from under the blanket.
Humans couldn’t see him anyway, so it was convenient.
Four men sat around the table, each cross-legged on one side, playing mahjong.
Posi-chan thought, “Ah, so this game hasn’t disappeared after all.”
He floated up onto the tabletop.
Tiles were being discarded one after another.
He peeked at everyone’s hands, quietly predicting who was most likely to win soon.
Just then, a cat strolled into the room — apparently the family pet.
Humans didn’t notice Posi-chan, but the cat clearly sensed him presence.
“Meow.”
The cat pounced right at him.
“Hey! What do you think you’re doing!?”
The mahjong tiles scattered everywhere.
The man who was about to win groaned.
“Seriously? I was so close…”
“Can you take this cat away, honey!?”
The homeowner asked his wife to remove the cat from the room.
Posi-chan sighed in relief.
Kotatsu and mahjong — a combination once thought to be fading away — was still quietly alive.
Notes
Kotatsu: A low wooden table covered with a thick blanket, with a heater built into the underside. People sit around it with their legs under the blanket to stay warm during winter in Japan.
Mahjong: A tile-based tabletop game originating in China, traditionally played by four people.
