🪶 K’s COLUMN 010 : 芝公園周辺のカラス
芝公園周辺の道路では、よく車に轢かれたハトの死体が転がっている。
その死骸にすぐさまカラスが群がってきて跡形もなく食い尽くす。
あれは完全に都市型食物連鎖だ。
ハトが事故に遭い、数分〜十数分でカラスが察知、仲間を呼ぶのだ。
そしてあっという間に“処理完了”である。
見た目はグロいが自然としては異様に効率的だ。
カラスは視力も知能も高くて、
「死骸＝安全に栄養を得られるイベント」だと理解している。
しかも都内のカラスは人を怖がらない、信号を理解する、ゴミ出し曜日を覚える。
もう半分市民なのだ。
公園の蛇口を嘴で操作し、水を飲むカラスもいるからこれには驚きだ。
人間が蛇口を捻る動作を密かに見ていたのだろう。
指でなく嘴でやってのけるから、器用である。
ハトはこんな芸当はできない。
産卵期や子育てシーズンになるとカラスに近づくのは要注意だ。
特に人間の男性はなぜか標的になりやすい。
私は実際に襲われた男性を遠くから何度も目撃している。
頭を旋回して嘴で突くのだ。
男性は頭部から血を流していた。
しかも一度標的となると、何度もターゲットの対象となる。
カラスがその男性を敵と看做したということだろうか。
人間の男性がカラスにとっての敵となるニオイでもはなっているのかどうかはわからない。
女性や子供が襲われている姿は一度も見たことがない。
カラスには迂闊に近づかないことだ。

🪶 K’s COLUMN 010 : Crows Around Shiba Park
On the roads around Shiba Park, it’s not uncommon to see the bodies of pigeons that have been struck by cars.
Almost immediately, crows gather around the carcass and devour it until nothing remains.
It is a perfectly functioning urban food chain.
A pigeon meets with an accident, and within minutes — sometimes ten minutes at most — crows detect it and call their companions.
In no time at all, the “processing” is complete.
Visually, it’s gruesome, but as a natural system, it is eerily efficient.
Crows have excellent eyesight and high intelligence.
They understand that a carcass represents an event where nutrition can be obtained safely.
Crows in Tokyo are also unafraid of humans.
They understand traffic signals and remember garbage collection days.
They are already half citizens.
I was also surprised to see crows operating park faucets with their beaks to drink water.
They must have secretly observed humans turning the tap.
They manage the action not with fingers, but with their beaks — remarkably skillful.
Pigeons are incapable of such feats.
During egg-laying and chick-rearing seasons, it is best to keep your distance from crows.
For some reason, human males are especially likely to become targets.
I have personally witnessed men being attacked from afar on multiple occasions.
The crows circle their heads and strike with their beaks.
The men were bleeding from their heads.
Once someone becomes a target, they may be targeted repeatedly.
Perhaps the crow has judged that man to be an enemy.
I don’t know whether human males emit some kind of scent that crows perceive as hostile.
I have never once seen women or children being attacked.
Do not approach crows carelessly.
