🧸 K’s COLUMN 055 : Stuffed Animals
When people think of stuffed animals, they usually think of children’s toys. But I never had one growing up.
The reason was simple. My mother believed stuffed animals were filthy because they were full of dust mites. Since they were stuffed with cotton, she assumed they were the perfect breeding ground for them. She may have been half right, but I never actually checked.
To be honest, I had never even seen a dust mite. I had no idea what one looked like. But seeing how much my mother hated them, I imagined they must be terrifying little creatures—about as bad as cockroaches.
So when I visited a friend’s house and saw their child surrounded by dozens of stuffed animals, I was genuinely shocked.
Good grief… That kid is surrounded by pests!
Then something strange happened.
My mother bought stuffed animals for my younger sister.
My sister loved playing with them.
I simply couldn’t understand it.
What if the dust mites attacked her?
They never did.
I don’t know whether dust mites are shy or whether they choose their victims carefully, but I never heard of anyone being attacked by mites hiding inside a stuffed animal.
If anything, people said stuffed animals were actually good for a child’s emotional development.
By then, I was completely confused.
So I asked my mother.
She wasn’t thinking about emotional development at all.
“If I buy her a stuffed animal, she’ll be happy.”
That was the only reason.
“So… what if the dust mites attack her?”
“When that happens, we’ll deal with it.”
Then she casually added,
“If she gets bitten, we’ll just take her to a dermatologist.”
Looking back, it seems that in our family, my mother’s way of thinking was far more unpredictable than the dust mites themselves.
