🐈⬛ K’s COLUMN 040 : タロウの妹、ヒメ
先日のコラムにタロウのことを書いた。
今回はヒメのことを書く。
ヒメはタロウと違って人見知りが激しい。
人間を見るとそそくさに雲隠れする。
そして餌をもらう時間だけはちゃっかり現れるそうだ。
いつだったか、タロウとヒメが並んで餌待ちしているところに遭遇した。
同じ双子の猫なのに、ヒメはタロウと違って自由に動き回ることができるため、無駄な肉は付いていない。
ヒメとタロウはおそらく同じ餌を同じ量だけ食べている。
さてヒメだが、先日タロウと一緒におとなしく座っている姿を見かけた。
タロウが耳の裏を掻いてもらうために、私に近づいてきてゴロンと横になった。
私は腰を下ろして、タロウの耳の裏などを掻き始めた。
ヒメはその様子をちょっと離れて見ていたが、私がタロウの耳を掻き始めると近くへ寄ってきて、私の鼻近くに自分の鼻を近づけてきた。
私は大変驚いた。
ヒメがそんな行動をとるとは思わなかったからだ。
「お兄ちゃんの耳掻き係だから、どんな人か確認しているだけ」
なのかもしれない。
そして後ろに下がり、タロウと私の様子をじっと伺っていた。
次にヒメをみた時には、ヒメは逃げることもなくタロウの耳の後ろを掻く私の姿を観察しながら一定の距離を置き、じっとしていた。
そのうちに私にもっと近づいてくる日があるのだろうか？
実際猫は群れをなす動物ではない。
特に野良は乳離れしたら基本的に1匹で行動する。
保護猫で半野良のタロウとヒメはちょっと特殊だ。
ヒメの方が猫らしい生き方をしているのかもしれない。
次に会った時、ヒメはまた私に鼻を近づけてくるのだろうか。
🐈⬛ K’s COLUMN 040 : Hime, Taro’s Sister
In my previous column, I wrote about Taro.
This time, I’d like to write about Hime.
Unlike Taro, Hime is very shy around people. Whenever she sees a human, she quickly disappears from sight. Yet somehow, she always manages to show up right on time when food is being served.
One day, I happened to see Taro and Hime waiting for their meal side by side.
Even though they are twins, Hime looks quite different from Taro. Since she can move around freely, unlike her three-legged brother, she carries no extra weight. I suspect they eat the same food and probably in the same amounts.
Recently, I saw Hime sitting quietly beside Taro.
As usual, Taro came over to me and flopped onto the ground, asking for his favorite ear scratches. I sat down and began scratching behind his ears.
Hime watched from a short distance away.
Then, as I continued scratching Taro’s ears, she slowly approached me and brought her nose close to mine.
I was genuinely surprised.
I had never expected Hime to do such a thing.
Perhaps she was thinking:
“He’s the one who scratches my brother’s ears. I should find out what kind of person he is.”
After that, she stepped back and carefully observed both Taro and me.
The next time I saw her, Hime didn’t run away at all. Instead, she stayed nearby, keeping a certain distance while quietly watching me scratch behind Taro’s ears.
I wonder if there will come a day when she decides to come even closer.
Cats are not naturally pack animals. Once feral kittens are weaned and become independent, they generally live and move about on their own.
Taro and Hime, however, are a little different. As rescued cats who still live partly like strays, they share a rather unusual bond.
Perhaps Hime is the one living the more cat-like life.
When I see her again, I wonder if she will bring her nose close to mine once more.
