🎬 K’s COLUMN 045 : 買われた男が、買う男に転身
1980年、当時中学生だった私は劇場で『アメリカン・ジゴロ』を観た。
内容は割愛するが、当時R-指定とか存在したかどうかは覚えていない。
印象に残っているのは、私がレコードでよく聞いていたブロンディの『コール・ミー』が主題歌だった事、SMチックな描写、リチャード・ギア扮するジゴロが筋トレをしていて美しい腹筋を披露していたことだ。
自分の裸を見られる商売なので、それに見合う体型を維持しなければ、上流階級の奥方に相手にされないということなのだろうか。
一流のジゴロという仕事は、容姿も体型も商品そのものなのだろう。
コウモリみたいに足が吊り下がった状態で行う腹筋があるとは、その時初めて知った。
1990年、私は『プリティ・ウーマン』を観た。
10年前に男娼を演じていたリチャード・ギアが街の娼婦を買う側になっていた。
キャスティングした人たちは、この対比を意識していたのだろうか。
その背景は知るよしもないが、観ていてなんだかちょっとだけおかしくなった。
映画の中の役柄だけを追えば、かつて買われていた男が、今度は買う側へ回ったことになる。
現実の話なら、これはずいぶんな大出世だ。
『アメリカン・ジゴロ』と『プリティ・ウーマン』は世界観が全く違うので、話の内容は全く別物として捉えなければならないが、リチャード・ギアがどちらも主人公を演じているので、どうしても関連付けて見てしまう。
他にもそういう映画は多数存在するのかもしれない。
そして俳優は年齢とともに役柄が変わる。
だから同じ俳優の作品を年代順に観ると、映画とは別に”もう一つの物語”が見えてくることがある。
そうやってみると、また違った感じで映画を観ることが出来る。
それもまた別の楽しみ方であると私は思っている。

🎬 K’s COLUMN 045 : From Being Bought to Becoming the Buyer
In 1980, when I was a junior high school student, I saw American Gigolo in a movie theater.
I don’t remember whether there was an R rating in Japan at the time, so I’ll skip the details of the story.
What stayed with me most was that Blondie’s Call Me—a song I often played on my record player—was the theme song, the somewhat BDSM-like atmosphere, and Richard Gere’s character showing off his impressive abs during a workout.
Since his job required clients to admire his body, I suppose maintaining a perfect physique was simply part of the profession. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have attracted wealthy women from high society.
For a top-class gigolo, appearance and physical condition are part of the product itself.
It was also the first time I had ever seen someone doing sit-ups while hanging upside down like a bat.
Then, in 1990, I watched Pretty Woman.
The same Richard Gere, who had played a male escort ten years earlier, was now playing the wealthy man who hires a prostitute.
I sometimes wonder whether the casting directors were aware of that contrast.
Of course, I have no way of knowing their intentions, but I couldn’t help finding it a little amusing.
If you look only at the roles he played, the man who was once “bought” had now become the one doing the buying.
In real life, you might even call that quite a remarkable promotion.
Of course, American Gigolo and Pretty Woman are completely different films with entirely different worlds, so they should be appreciated separately.
Still, because Richard Gere stars in both, it’s hard not to connect them in my mind.
There are probably many other examples like this in cinema.
As actors grow older, the kinds of roles they play naturally change.
Watching the same actor’s films in chronological order can reveal another story running alongside the films themselves.
Looking at movies this way gives me a completely different viewing experience.
To me, that’s just another enjoyable way to appreciate cinema.
