🪨 K’s COLUMN 030 : 最後に残ったもの
私がその池を見た時、すでに干上がっていて、草が生え放題だった。
実際そこに池があったのかと思わせるほどに土は割れて、干からびてしまっていた。
藪蚊が飛び交い、湿った場所も所々に残っている。
大きな岩が至る所にあり、かつては池だったことを彷彿させた。
さて、その池はどのようにしてそのような無惨な姿に変貌してしまったのか？
その池はもとは鯉が何匹も飼われていたらしい。
そこへ雷魚が現れたのである。
普通の池に突然雷魚が出没するわけはないので、誰かが放り込んだのだろう。
最初はその雷魚を捕まえて駆除しようとしたそうだ。
ところがなかなか捕まらない。
日が経つにつれ、徐々に鯉が姿を消していってしまい、最後にはとうとう雷魚が1匹となった。
誰かが餌を与えるわけでもなく、それでも雷魚は逞しく泳いでいた。
ある日、台風がその地域を襲った。
堤防は決壊し、床上浸水となって、それがきっかけで雷魚も流されてしまった。
駆除しようとしたものが、自然災害のおかげでどこかへ連れ去られた。
これはめでたいのかどうかよくわからないが、その家の住人は池を元通りに修復しようとはしなかった。
第一お金がかかるし、そこへ鯉を放つのもまたお金がかかる。
何かを養うには、それなりに覚悟が必要なのだ。
その話を聞くまで、私は雷魚というものを知らなかったが、他所から侵略してきた生き物というものは生態系を変えてしまう恐ろしさを改めて知った。
珍しいと飼う前に、飼って育てたらその後どういうことになるのかという事を、想像しなければならないのだ。

🪨 K’s COLUMN 030 : The Last Thing Left Behind
By the time I saw the pond, it had already dried up, overrun with wild grass.
The earth was cracked and parched, so much so that it was hard to believe there had ever been water there at all.
Mosquitoes hovered in the air, and here and there, damp patches still lingered.
Large rocks lay scattered throughout, faint reminders that this had once been a pond.
How had it come to such a desolate state?
I was told that the pond had once been home to several koi.
Then one day, a snakehead appeared.
A fish like that does not simply show up in an ordinary pond—someone must have released it there.
At first, they tried to catch it and get rid of it.
But it proved difficult.
As time passed, the koi gradually disappeared, until in the end, only the snakehead remained.
No one fed it, and yet it continued to swim, tenaciously.
Then one day, a typhoon struck the area.
The embankment gave way, flooding the houses, and in the chaos, the snakehead was swept away.
What people had tried to remove was ultimately taken away by a natural disaster.
Whether that was fortunate or not, I cannot say.
In any case, the owner never attempted to restore the pond.
It would have cost money.
And to release koi into it again would have cost even more.
To care for something requires a certain resolve.
Until I heard this story, I had never known about snakehead fish.
But I came to understand, once again, how creatures introduced from elsewhere can disrupt an entire ecosystem.
Before deciding to keep something simply because it is unusual,
one must imagine what may come afterward.
