🤖 K’s COLUMN 070 : 家庭用フィジカルAIで重要なのは
考えてみると家庭用フィジカルAIで重要なのは「何ができるか」だけではない。
人間や動物にどう感じられるかも、ものすごく重要だ。
そして更に考えてみると、これから何年か生きていく間に、ロボットが家の中で普通に仕事をしている光景を目にする可能性は十分あると思う。
もちろん、どの程度まで普及するか、価格がいくらになるかまではまだ分からない。
しかし今のフィジカルAIの進歩を見ていると、
「そんなものはSFだから無理」
という段階から、
「技術的にはできそう。あとは価格と安全性と量産だ」
という段階へ移りつつあるのが、かなり大きい。
アトムを見ていた私が、今度は「本当に家の中で動いているロボット」を見る。
これは、なかなかすごい未来の目撃者ではないかと思う。
でも、まだ完成していない未来を、現在進行形で眺めているという感じが一番面白いのかもしれない。
子どもの頃にアトムやサイボーグ009を見て、
「こんなの本当にできるのかな？」
と思っていたものが、何十年も経って少しずつ近づいている。
これはなかなか感慨深い。
まず第一段階として、人間の代わりに危険な場所へ行くロボットだ。
工事現場、災害現場、工場、高所など、人間の代わりに身体を使わせる、という意味では、家庭よりずっと導入する理由が明確だ。
そして第二段階は高度な判断と身体能力が必要な専門用途だ。
ここで8マンとかロボット刑事の世界観が出てくる。
ただ、映画みたいに
「ロボット刑事が犯人を追いかける」
という方向より、まずは危険区域の確認、偵察、捜索、搬送など、人間を危険から遠ざける用途のほうが現実的だと思う。
ここで第三段階へ、生き物への配慮が必要な場所へ進出するところへようやく行き着く。
この段階で、やっと家の中のお手伝いができるロボットの登場となる。
ロボコンみたいな感じだろうか。
おっちょこちょいだけど、ゴキブリが嫌いで愛嬌がある・・・、ここまではいかないとしても、掃除は最低限度こなせるのではないだろうか。
あの、床を這い回るルンバとは一味も二味も違う。
天井のライトも簡単に取り替えられたりできるのは、第一段階をクリアしているからだ。
脚立もおそらく必要ない。
手足がビョーンと伸びる。
インスペクター・ガジェットか！？
人間を安全な方向へ誘導できるのは、第二段階をクリアしてからだ。
なんといってもガードマンのようなことを経験済みでチップに組み込まれていたら、人間が危険な場面に直面している時に察知し、救いの手を差し伸べることができる。
第三段階までの道のりは、もう少し時間が必要だろう。
家の中の障害物も見分けられないと、そこまでに行き着くのは結構厳しいかもしれない。
ペットや食器などの壊れやすい物、床に放置されたゲーム機などもあるかもしれない。
場合によってはよちよち歩きの赤ちゃんだっている。
階段のある家もあるだろうから、ロボット側もかなりのトレーニングが必要になるはずだ。
しかしながら私は、その瞬間がすぐそこまで来ているんじゃないのかなと思っている。
それがいつかはわからないけれど、まずは第一に、受け入れ体制が必要になるだろう。
いくつかテストにテストを重ね、
「これはいける！」
というふうにGOサインが出る日を、首を長くして待っている自分がここにいる。

K’s COLUMN 070 : What Matters About Physical AI for the Home
When I think about it, what matters about physical AI for the home is not just “what it can do.”
How humans and animals feel about it is also extremely important.
And when I think about it, there is a good chance that within the next several years of my life,
I may actually see robots working normally inside people’s homes.
Of course, I still don’t know how widely they will spread or how much they will cost.
But when I look at the progress being made in physical AI today, it seems that we are gradually moving from the stage of
“Something like that is just science fiction. It’s impossible.”
to the stage of
“Technically, it looks possible. Now all we need are affordable prices, safety, and mass production.”
I think that is a pretty big change.
I grew up watching Astro Boy, and now I may get to see
“robots actually moving around inside a home.”
I think that makes me quite an amazing witness to the future.
But perhaps the most interesting thing is that I am watching a future that hasn’t been completed yet, while it is still unfolding right in front of me.
When I was a child, I watched Astro Boy and Cyborg 009 and wondered,
“Could something like this really be possible?”
Now, several decades later, the things I once imagined are gradually getting closer to reality.
That is quite a moving thought.
The first stage would be robots going into dangerous places instead of humans.
Construction sites, disaster zones, factories, high places, and so on.
When it comes to having robots use their physical abilities in place of humans, there are much clearer reasons for introducing them in these environments than there are in the home.
The second stage would be specialized applications that require advanced judgment and physical abilities.
This is where the world of 8 Man and Robot Detective comes into play.
However, rather than having a
“Robot Detective chase criminals”
like in a movie, it would probably be more realistic at first to use robots for checking dangerous areas, reconnaissance, searching, transporting people or objects, and other tasks that keep humans away from danger.
And then we finally arrive at the third stage: entering places where consideration for living creatures is necessary.
This is the stage where robots that can actually help around the house would finally appear.
Would it be something like Robocon?
Maybe it would be clumsy, hate cockroaches, and have a lovable personality…
Well, perhaps it wouldn’t go quite that far, but I think it could at least manage basic cleaning.
It would be quite different from that Roomba crawling around on the floor.
A robot being able to easily replace a ceiling light would mean that it had already cleared the first stage.
It probably wouldn’t need a stepladder, either.
Its arms and legs could just go biiiiig and stretch out.
Inspector Gadget!?
A robot being able to guide a human toward safety would come only after it had cleared the second stage.
After all, if it had already experienced doing things like working as a security guard and those abilities had been built into its system, it could detect when a person was facing danger and lend a helping hand.
It will probably take a little more time to reach the third stage.
If a robot cannot even distinguish the obstacles inside a home, getting that far will be quite difficult.
There could be fragile things such as pets and dishes, game consoles left lying on the floor, and all sorts of other things.
Depending on the household, there could even be a toddler taking their first wobbly steps.
And since some homes have stairs, the robots themselves will probably need quite a lot of training.
Nevertheless, I have a feeling that this moment may be just around the corner.
I don’t know exactly when it will happen, but first of all, we will need to be ready to accept these robots into our homes.
After test upon test, I am here, waiting impatiently for the day when someone finally gives the green light and says,
“This is going to work!”
I am waiting for that day with my neck stretched out in anticipation.
